The Buddhist Concept of the Self

Please post your comment on the Buddhist concept of Self.

  1. The buddhist concept of the self agrees with Hume, that essentially there is no self, rather it's an illusion. With the example of the flame, that is constantly changing with no personal identity, because it is never the same fire ( like the river example ) ... I am able to agree with this. We too are always in a process of change... but then as a result its believed that there is no continuous identity? I think we are always changing, our self changes through different aspects of life, but i would have to disagree that we have no personal identity. With our identity we are a label of our existence, who we are. for example.. like our names/social security etc.

  3. Buddhism teaches self is an illusion covered by ego and to be at peace is to be true to oneself.
Hume declares there is no self but states humans are nothing more then emotions and memories, Which half agrees with the teachings of Buddha.
I believe this subject is a trick question. People can over come emotions with will but only if their will is strong. Everyone one has there own answers and their own questions.

  4. I do not agree with the Buddhist concept of self. Buddhism is saying that there is no such thing as self. Even if my name is Sara from birth that doesnt mean that Sara is the self. Its just a label. Because we continuely change, we are not one self? But thats what makes each and everyone of us different and gives our own identity.

  5. I agree and disagree with KrcicL's comments "With our identity we are a label of our existence, who we are. for example.. like our names/social security etc." and "I think we are always changing, our self changes through different aspects of life, but i would have to disagree that we have no personal identity." For the first quote, even if I forgot I had a self, or had a different self according to Buddhism, I would have the same social security number and name. These labels have nothing to do with my self. I agree with the second quote because even though we experience things everyday, we still have a unifying self that organizes each and every experience according to our psyche, and adapts them to our self.

  6. i agree with KrcicL's view of Buddhist cooncept. Everything is constantly chaning. It is very difficult to identify people through personal identity because ourselves are changing. We may not have the same charateristic we had when we were children. I give KrcicL's view a 100.

  7. I agree with Krcicl, even before taking this class i thought myself to be in a state of constant change. The buddhist concept might be too vague to agree with fully, perhaps with further research one can understand it better.
