  1. "Cogito ergo sum" was a conclusion he came to through his method of doubt. It is translated as "I think, therefore I am", which is related to the idea that self can be defined by the mind. In using the "method of doubt" his conclusion is self-evident, because in using the method the fact that an individual can even think about doubting something goes to show that there is a mind, that cannot be doubted, at work. I agree that the mind proves we exist and effects the perceptions of both others and ourselves.

  2. I disagree with descarte's theory and Kolin Y. The mind itselff doesn't prove that people exist. Just because a person is brain dead or has no control over there mind doesn't mean they don't exist. Those same people exist as much as we do even though they have no mind or cannot think for themselves

  3. I agree with what Kolin and Descartes said, and to Joshua i disagree completely. If someone is brain dead they do not exist as the same as they were or may even be considered the same. The image and perception of a person that we have may cease. If there is no brain function we cannot think or be who we are, the body itself is a vessel that holds our true self. With no ability of thoughts then we are left with a former perception that we wish would still exist as we hold on to that conclusion.

  4. I agree with Joshua based on Descartes theory. Just because someone is physically ill and maybe not considered to be "normal" doesn't mean they don't exist. There still here physically so they're a part of life. We don't know for sure who and what has a mind of its own to be honest. We don't know what actually controls our thoughts and gives us this gift of thought. How would we know that we're not programmed to be the way we were are and think the way we do? So who can say that only if I'm thinking then I must exist if I'm not sure that its my true self who is thinking of whats in my mind? After all human kind has come down to depending on theories so who really knows the truth about what it means to exist.

  5. Huseyin K : Descartes reasoned that if he doubted, he was thinking, and therefore he must exist. Thus existence depended upon perception. I agree Descartes that if the brain dies, he or she doesn' t exists because his mind and his body are not functional . Therefore, a person would not know who he is, what he likes because a person is a vegetative state.

  6. “I think therefore I am,” Descartes claim of the self as a thinking thing is evidences of existence. I agreed with Descartes a hundred percent. The fact that we can process thoughts and ideas is proof that we are alive. If the mind is not functioning as in the case of someone who is brain dead, the person is not alive. The mind is powerful tool; it is the one thing you can’t doubt. You may doubt your thoughts or ideas but you cannot the fact that you doubting.

  7. I agree with Descartes that "You think, therefore I am", however that alone should not define the self completely. The answer alone sounds too simple of an answer. I agree with ilsey's comment but Descarte's definition of the self sounds more like the definition of existence or definition that you're alive and not what defines you. It's like during a job interview you're asked to talk about yourself and you reply "I can think! Therefore I am me!" Descartes definition, I feel, does not define the self appropriately.

  8. I agree with Rene Descartes theory of Dualism. That there is such thing as the conscious self and physical self. The conscious self is the essence of your self, you are a "thinking thing". He expanded the concept of the self to include the thinking and reasoning mind. The physical self he believes is material, mortal and nonthinking. It is fully governed by the physical laws of the universe. For example a person went on a comatose the brain is dead but the body is still feeding that would be the physical self. If a persons dead both the brain and the body is gone but the soul still continue to exist by breaking away from the body, seeking union with the spiritual realm.

  9. i agree with Descartes theory of the self stating "every time i am thinking, i must be existing", because i am a thinking thing. everything i see, feel, think etc. can be doubted. although i cannot doubt that i am thinking, so i must be existing. our reasoning process and understanding is belonging to the human self.

  10. I agree with Descarte's "method of doubt", his view of self and dualism. As he says that whatever cannot be doubted is certain. I agree that existence of material things and our mind can not be doubted. For example, I can't doubt that I am doubting. He explains there are physical and conscious self. There is self awareness and knowledge is gained through the mind and reasoning.

  11. I agree with G.Bohack's comment, "That there is such thing as the conscious self and physical self. The conscious self is the essence of your self, you are a "thinking thing" I thought her example fit, and i agree with her saying if a person went into a comatose that the soul could continue to exist seeking union with the spiritual realm! Her comment was very well thought out, and it made me re-think as well on what i thought about descartes. I grade her comment an A.

  13. I agree with Joshua because thinking isn't the only thing that should prove your existence in the world. There's also a person, a physical being that still exists even if the mind can not think but then again how can you really tell if the mind is not thinking? If a mind is a "thinking thing" and can not be seen, how can anyone make an assumption that if you do not think therefore, you do not exists? Our body and mind maybe intertwined in dualism but our body doesn't always do what out mind is thinking.
